Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner will be seeking his second Super Bowl ring.
Do good things really happen in threes? Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner soon will find out.
Warner is the 10th quarterback to start at least three Super Bowls. The others are John Elway (five), Terry Bradshaw, Tom Brady, Jim Kelly, Joe Montana and Roger Staubach (four apiece) and Troy Aikman, Bob Griese and Fran Tarkenton (three each).
Six of the nine quarterbacks won in their third Super Bowl start. Elway, Tarkenton and Kelly didn’t make the cut.
Here’s one other tidbit worth noting: Brady and Warner are the NFL’s only active quarterbacks to start at least three Super Bowls. The other eight are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. ...
In July, I spoke with a number of former NFL quarterbacks about the young QBs in the league today. To a man, each had nothing but praise for the Steelers’ “Big Ben” Roethlisberger. “I think Ben is in a position to become, really, one of the truly greats in this game,” former Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann said. “He’s gone through some difficult times. He had all the success as a rookie, and then he got brought down the hard way.” ... The scene has been replayed several times over — Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin yelling at offensive coordinator Todd Haley on the sideline during the NFC Championship Game. The peacemaker who held Boldin at bay during the confrontation? Cardinals defensive lineman — and Denver South High graduate — Calais Campbell. Campbell was the Cardinals’ second-round pick in 2008, the 50th player selected overall. ... If Dan Reeves accepts a role with the Dallas Cowboys as a consultant, does that mean the quarterback he drafted while with the Atlanta Falcons, Michael Vick, isn’t far behind? How about a Reeves-Mike Shanahan reunion in Big D? OK, stop chuckling. ... I heard former University of Colorado athlete-turned-ESPNer Kordell Stewart label Steelers WR Hines Ward a “sure-fire Hall of Famer.” OK. Compare the stats and ask yourself: When does former Broncos great Rod Smith get in?
