Why do we have to pay for pols' bungling?

Published January 26, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

So, because cities and municipalities have mismanaged their budgets for so long, we now have to "bail them out" as well? Power-hungry elected officials have watered down legislation so much and so often in order to get that "feel good" jump in popularity polls that now most of the infrastructure is falling apart. It wasn't a sexy enough issue to motivate voters, and no elected official has ever had the courage to tackle those issues that actually keep us safe.

Now we have to pay more and more. More taxes on gasoline, more fees to register your car, higher insurance rates . . . the list goes on and on. I know, we are the ones who voted them in; however, shouldn't there be some accountability? If we can tie teachers' pay to their performance, why not elected officials as well? Maybe this year I'll start my own campaign and call it "I want my money back!"
