TWO NEW EVENTS
The Celebrity Chuckwagon Cookoff and the stock dog sale were added to the stock show's lineup, and both went off without a hitch Thursday. Here's a recap:
THE COOKOFF
Four chuckwagon chefs, who travel the state whipping up their Western delights, competed for the taste buds (and votes) of stock show attendees. More than 2,500 samples were served. Denver celebs also were on hand to promote Western Heritage week and to raise money for their chosen charities.
* The chuckwagon cooks: Robert Lawrence, of Grand Junction; John Schaffner, of Wray; Mark Moore, of Parker; and Les Mergelman, of Cedaredge. (An interesting note: Schaffner is country singer Michael Martin Murphy's chef.
* The celebs on hand: The Colorado Rockies' Todd Helton and Clint Barmes, KYGO's Catfish Hunter, 9News' Becky Ditchfield and Entravision's Luis Canela.
* The People's Choice chuckwagon winner went to Moore's wagon, which was sponsored by Entravision. Moore cooked up one mean pot roast.
* Money raised: Four 5-gallon donation buckets were on hand, each displaying the names of the celeb's charity of choice. Nearly $625 was raised. Here's the breakdown:
The Rockies: $264.25 for the Cowboy Crisis Fund
Entravision: $144.80 for the Hispanic Annual Salute
KYGO: $127.65 for St. Jude Children's Hospital
9News: $88.25 for 9 Cares Colorado Shares
* On the menu: Chicken fried steak, beef tips and noodles,
beef stew and pot roast (with biscuits and cobbler)
THE STOCK DOG SALE
Palmers Buffy, a female 18-month-old border collie, fetched $4,100, the highest bid during the sale, for Timber Lake S.D.'s Kari Palmer and Pete Carmichael.
$27,850 was the total take from the sales. Ten dogs were sold.
