BUSINESS AS USUAL

While a large part of the nation tuned in to watch Barack Obama be sworn in as the first African-American president, it was business as usual at the National Western Stock Show.

There was little pause in the schedule as the U.S. Equestrian Federation open performance classes, junior market swine show and the Simmental junior breeding show carried on through the inauguration hour.

Liz LeSatz, an intern for media and public relations manager, said the PR office was only aware of two televisions tuned in on the coverage. The Qwest booth was broadcasting CNN, and a few attendees paused to watch the coverage. Another TV was set up for staff and volunteers, though most continued to go about their work instead, LeSatz said.

"The stock show is not really geared toward political events, so that's why there was no special break," LeSatz said. "Most people were running around and didn't stop to watch. We were enthralled in the stock show."

THIS LI'L PIGGY

With some stock show attendees having pigs on the brain during the inauguration hour, we thought the critters must be deserving of a little Roundup trivia. So here are some fun facts.

* Pigs wallow in mud for a reason. The pasty goop helps keep them cool, protects them from sunburn and wards off mosquitoes.

* Pigs can run a mile in seven minutes, so watch out for flying mud.

* If you think a pig stinks, blame it on the mud - not sweat. Pigs can't sweat - they don't have sweat glands.
