On Sept. 27, 1933, the Pittsburgh Pirates (whose nickname would be changed to Steelers in 1940) won their first NFL regular-

season game, 14-13 over the Chicago Cardinals — now nested in Arizona. ...

The Steelers have been led to a Super Bowl by three different head coaches — Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher and Mike Tomlin. Six other franchises have gone to Super Bowls with three different coaches — Denver, Dallas, Los Angeles/St. Louis Rams, New England, New York Giants and Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts. The L.A./Oakland Raiders are the only NFL team to reach the Super Bowl with four different head coaches — John Rauch, John Madden, Tom Flores and Bill Callahan. ...

Dallas is the only one of those eight teams to win a Super Bowl with three different head coaches — Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer. ...

The Cardinals are the first 400-400 team to reach a Super Bowl — scoring and allowing 400 or more points during a regular season. They’re also the first team to reach the Super Bowl with fewer than 10 wins in a 16-game season since the L.A. Rams lost to Pittsburgh in SB XIV. ...

The NFL’s Quarterback Class of 2004 is on the verge of producing more Super Bowl wins than the fabled Class of ’83. Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger already has one championship ring and fellow ’04 alum Eli Manning won in Super Bowl XLII. Those two wins match the total produced in 11 Super Bowls from the Class of ’83 — both by Denver’s John Elway.
