Longmont's tough defense stifles Windsor in boys basketball

Published January 16, 2009 at 11:36 p.m.

The way the Longmont boys basketball team played Friday night against Class 4A No. 2 Windsor, it's hard to believe the Trojans have lost a game at home this season.

Longmont started so impressively against its Northern League rival, the Wizards never really had an opportunity to remain unbeaten in league play.

With the Wizards' best player, Craig Von Allman, neutralized by stifling defense, Longmont jumped to a 16-8 first-quarter lead and never was threatened in a 58-40 victory. It was the first loss in league play for the Wizards (8-2 overall, 6-1).

"That's what we like to do, come out and go hard from the start and see if they can handle the pressure," said Syd Donaldson, who led all scorers, with 19 points. "It paid off."

Donaldson helped smother Von Allman in the first quarter, and Longmont forward Tom Pane had the hot scoring hand. Pane scored eight straight points in the first quarter to stake the Trojans to their strong start.

"I just wanted to get things started and come out and play with a lot of energy," said Pane, who finished with 12 points.

Von Allman, who averages almost 20 points a game, picked up two quick fouls and spent much of the first half on the bench. The Wizards tried to get him involved early in the second half, but Longmont (9-2, 6-2) was determined to stop him. He finished with one field goal, the Wizards' first points, and scored six points.

"They had two guys on him most of the game," Windsor coach Dustin Duncan said. "We rotated the ball and got it inside into Curtis (Neely), and we were hoping they would double down inside on Curtis and we'd get some kickouts, but they were intent on shutting down Craig."

Neely, a 6-foot-7 center, led Windsor with 12 points. He helped whittle the Trojans lead to 32-21 early in the third quarter, but Donaldson hit a three-pointer to stop the Wizards' minirun, and Longmont held a 20-point lead for most of the fourth quarter. Donaldson's fourth-quarter dunk, off an alley-oop assist from Pane, signaled the end of a long night for Windsor.

"We play with energy, and that really helps our team," Donaldson said.

Windsor and Sterling entered the game as the only unbeatens in Northern Conference play, but Friday night, Sterling lost to Greeley West, the same team that handed Longmont its only home loss this season. Four of the 17 teams in the league - Windsor, Sterling, Greeley West and Broomfield - have one conference loss.
