Regis hockey gives win a waive

— There is no replay in high school hockey.

So Regis Jesuit center Connor Hayes had an apparent go- ahead goal waved off midway through the third period in an ultracompetitive, hard-hitting matchup between the top- ranked Raiders and No. 2 Lewis-Palmer on Friday night at Family Sports Center.

No matter. The balance was restored when Hayes delivered again with 3 minutes, 52 seconds left, finding just enough room between Rangers goalkeeper Brent Schwartz and the crossbar to lift Regis to a 2-1 victory and hand Lewis-Palmer its first loss this season.

“I think (the discounted goal) might have been in,” Hayes said. “It was explained to me that it hit the post and half the puck was over (the goal line) and half was out. I was a little upset at the time, but we ended up winning with a great team effort.”

The Raiders, playing in a nonleague game, had to come from behind to improve their mark to 8-0. It was scoreless after two periods, but Lewis-Palmer (6-1) started the third period on a power play after Regis defender Ian Rawley was thrown out for a spearing misconduct penalty late in the second period.

The Rangers took advantage when Travis Lachner backhanded a shot over the shoulder of Regis goalie Nick Cunningham for a 1-0 lead. The way Schwartz had been playing between the posts for Lewis-Palmer, it looked as if the single goal might stand.

But the Raiders, who average 6.5 goals a game, weren’t about to go away quietly. A little more than a minute after Lachner’s goal, Justin Johnson made the Rangers pay for a turnover with a short-handed goal to tie it. Johnson’s goal finished off the Rangers’ 5-minute power-play, which could have broke open the game. Instead, the Raiders got through it no worse than they started.

“We were down for five minutes on that penalty kill, and they only scored one goal,” Johnson said. “That was huge.”

Johnson assisted on Hayes’ winner, bringing the puck around the back of the net to set up Hayes.

“Schwartz is a fantastic goalie. He’s unbelievable,” Hayes said. “Johnson just swooped in and took the puck around the net and I just tucked it into the goal.”

Schwartz, who finished with 35 saves, didn’t take the loss easily. He took the blame for the Raiders’ two goals and vowed to improve his play for the rest of the season.

“I have a lot of room to improve,” he said. “They got two goals on two big mistakes, and that’s how they won the game. We are going to practice hard, and I guarantee you there is not another kid in the state who is going to be practicing as hard as I am.”
