Longtime Rocky writer's stepson remembers

Published February 27, 2009 at 3:02 p.m.

My stepfather, John Accola, worked for the Rocky for 22 years until his sudden death in 2006. During that time, he worked in many areas, finally settling into the business desk, providing years of award-winning stories and heartfelt human experiences. The news of your closure leaves not only shock, but also deep sadness that I will never be ever to go "home" again. Although John passed away almost three years ago, somehow still having the Rocky to read brought solace and comfort to my heart. Your closure becomes synonymous with a closure of part of my past.

I will always remember many long nights spent with my father at the news office. While he was feverishly racing against deadline, I would wander the newsroom finding books to read and trying to keep myself entertained. I came to know many at the Rocky, and saw most as grizzled, hard-nosed newshounds who always strived for perfection. The Denver Post, in their eyes, with nothing but senseless drivel, and it was up to them to hold together the last vestiges of truth and valor in reporting. Even though I have not been to the Rocky in years, I am certain that feeling is still present and will continue to persist in the memories of all who held the Rocky dear.

Thank you to all the staff and everyone who helped put the Rocky together. Your paper will always hold a special place in my heart.
