Roll Call: GOP in practical joke mode

Published February 26, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

IDENTITY THEFT

When freshman Rep. Mark Waller couldn't find his name tag Tuesday, he accused a couple of his GOP cohorts of taking it as a prank.

He got nowhere in finding it.

However, when the Colorado Springs Republican came back from lunch, he found the name tags of 10 of the accused sitting on his desk. He promptly put all of them on, prompting plenty of comments from his colleagues.

PAY UP, PLEASE

During a debate on a transportation bill, Rep. Frank McNulty, of Highlands Ranch, fought against allowing tolling on already existing roads. He lost.

When he returned to the office he shares with a number of fellow Republicans, he burst out laughing. His aide, Hillary Reed, had marked up the floor as if it were a road and put signs everywhere.

"Toll, please pay $1.95." "Toll, please pay $10." "Toll, please pay right arm."

The sign right before McNulty's desk read, "Toll, please pay first born child."

THERE IS NO YELLOW AT THE CAPITOL

"My daughter was sitting on my lap today in the House and she said, 'Daddy, I like it when you vote green.' I'm afraid she's going to be a Democrat."

Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma, said of 5-year-old Alyson. Pushing a red button means a "no" vote, green means "yes."

AND THEY'RE OFF . . .

The Senate will convene at 9 a.m. today, but the House is out today and tomorrow. Representatives have returned home for "district days" to meet with constituents.
