Neighbor saves woman, 92, from fire

Margery Kusulas lost her home to a fire Tuesday, but not her life, thanks to a neighbor who alerted the 92-year-old to the danger.
"I was just glad I was able to help," said Terry Kemp, 63, a retired businessman who alerted Kusulas and her daughter of the fire.
At 3:24 p.m., Arvada fire responded to a weed fire near the intersection of 72nd Avenue and Oak Street.
The flames followed the train tracks west to Colorado 72 and 93, burning mostly grass and weeds for about five miles. However, Kusulas' home and an outbuilding were destroyed by the blaze, although firefighters and residents were able to protect other homes.
At 3:30 p.m., Kemp's 15- year-old daughter, Jackie, was looking out the window of their home, saw the fire and alerted him.
"I told my daughter, 'I'm going to get them (the neighbors) out; you call 911 and get the horses,' " Kemp said. Kemp ran to Kusulas' house, about 30-40 yards west of his home. "I went straight to the door and yelled, 'You have to get out now.' "
Kusulas and her daughter were in the back bedroom, trying to figure out Kusulas' remotes to her new TV set and hadn't seen the fire.
The fire was probably caused by sparks from a passing Union Pacific train that went west through Arvada, said Scott Pribble, spokesman for Arvada fire.
