The Senate judiciary committee this afternoon is being asked to change the zero-tolerance law that led to the brief expulsion of a student drill team leader who had prop rifles in the trunk of her car.

Marie Morrow, a member of the Young Marines drill team, missed six days of school earlier this month when leaders of the Cherry Creek school district determined they had no choice but to expel her under the state law that bans guns on campus. The law makes no exception for fake guns used for legitimate youth activities.

Under SB 237 by Sen. Kevin Lundberg, R-Berthoud, school districts would have discretion over how to deal with cases like Morrow's.

Lundberg said Morrow's problem at Cherokee Trail High School was an "unintended consequence" of a law passed following the shootings at Columbine High School.

Morrow's punishment was reduced to the six days she already served. But she said today that the incident is still on her record.
