Published February 24, 2009 at 11:56 p.m.
Duluth, Minn., resident Tyler George inched ahead Tuesday in the men's curling team standings at the 2010 U.S. Olympic Team Trials at the Broomfield Event Center.
George and teammates Kris Perkovich, Kevin Johnson and Mark Haluptzok improved to 5-1 in the tournament after a 7-5 victory against Chicago resident Kevin Deeren's squad.
Five teams are tied for third place with 3-3 records behind George (5-1) and Mankato, Minn., resident Todd Birr (4-2).
Madison, Wis., resident Craig Brown's team recorded a 9-4 win against Birr's squad.
"We've been playing better each game," said Rich Ruohonen, the vice skip for Brown's rink. "To come out (Tuesday) and not get back-to-back losses is huge."
Duluth resident John Shuster's team kept in contention in the middle of the pack after earning a 7-4 win against Rolla, N.D., resident Craig Disher's rink.
"That game felt good," said John Benton, the lead for Shuster's team. "Everything was clicking - the attitudes were where they should be and we were communicating really well. I think building off this win and talking about the positives will help us."
