DA won't file charges in LenDale White assault case

Published February 24, 2009 at 9:39 a.m.

No charges will be brought against Denver native and Tennessee Titans running back LenDale White who was accused of striking a man with a belt buckle after a fender-bender in downtown Denver early Valentine's Day morning.

The Denver district attorney's office made the decision after reviewing the evidence, including surveillance video.

"There were no criminal charges that we could prove beyond a reasonable doubt in that incident," Lynn Kimbrough, the district attorney's spokeswoman, said Tuesday.

Denver police said the evidence did not support initial witness accounts about the altercation.

"The reason the case got dismissed is the evidence contradicts the statements," Denver police Lt. Matt Murray told The Tennessean in Nashville, which first reported the incident Monday.

White, who had an earlier clash with police in Denver in March, still could face punishment from the National Football League.

Murray said NFL officials expressed an interest in the case, The Tennessean reported.

"We are aware of the incident and have no comment," Titans coach Jeff Fisher told the newspaper Monday.

White, a second-round draft pick in 2006 from the University of Southern California, is on probation after pleading guilty to disturbing the peace in the March incident.

In that case, White was cited for destruction of property, disobedience of a lawful order/interference and resisting police.

The March dust-up occurred after closing time near a downtown Denver nightclub where a party had been thrown in White's honor.

White was granted a deferred judgment in the case, which allowed him to have his record wiped clean if he attended anger-management classes and stayed out of trouble for 12 months.
