Castle View rolls to first postseason victory
Published February 24, 2009 at 11:49 p.m.
The Castle View girls basketball team is not delusional.
The SaberCats know that Tuesday’s 77-46 win at Jefferson, their first ever postseason triumph, probably was their last victory of the season.
That’s because the SaberCats’ (10-13) next opponent in the Class 4A state tournament is two-time defending champion Broomfield. The same Broomfield that is 23-0 this season, has three Division I-bound players in its starting lineup, has won 35 straight and is 77-2 over the past three seasons.
But Castle View isn’t putt ing away its uniforms quite yet. The SaberCats are going to show up Friday and give it a go.
“I just stressed to the girls that everybody is zero-and-zero entering the playoffs,” Castle View coach Darcy Stracke said.
Well, now Stracke’s team is 1-0 – both this season and all-time in the playoffs. The SaberCats are a third-year program that wasn’t eligible for the postseason until this year. They wasted no time establishing themselves, going on an 18-0 run after giving allowing Jefferson to score the first basket of the game.
Courtney Murphy (game-best 21 points) scored the first 10 points of the burst and handed off the baton to Erika Langfeldt, who scored the next eight. Langfeldt finished with 18 points, Caroline Chandler 14 and Mary Snow a game-high 10 rebounds for Castle View, the ninth seed in the Tanya Haave Region.
=E 2Everybody was flowing,” said Murphy, who scored 16 in the first half as Castle View built a 38-16 lead. “Everybody was looking for the extra pass.”
Said Stracke: “We shared the ball well, had a lot of people scoring and the way we started the game really set the tone.”
Jefferson (19-5), the eighth-seed, entered with a lofty record, but it mostly was compiled against 3A competition. Castle View, meanwhile, was a member of the rugged Colorado Springs Metro League.
“We’re not used to playing against teams that big,” Jefferson guard Amanda Acosta said.
Acosta paced Jefferson with 15 points and Marisol Olmos added 11, but the Saints never recovered from Castle View’s early burst. The beginning of the second half was nearly a carbon copy of the outset of the first, as Jefferson scored the first basket then surrendered the next 16 points. The Saints didn’t help their cause by missing 18 of 26 free throws.
“We eventually started getting our running game going, but it was too late,” Acosta said. “They spaced their defense really well. If they saw our eyes looking one direction they’d make sure to cover that side.”
With Broomfield having a first-round bye, Eagles coach Mike Croell took in some of the game, getting an advance look at Castle View. The SaberCats insist they’re as prepared as they can be to take a crack at a monumental upset.
“We play better against bigger teams that don’t look to drive as much,” said Murphy, who nailed four three-pointers. “I think we’ll be fine as long as we come out the way we did tonight.”
