Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree will need at least 10 weeks to recover from surgery in which a screw will be inserted in his foot, according to the NFL's Web site.

— Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree, who is one of the most highly-rated players in this year's NFL draft, said he will not have surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot until after his pro day workout next month.

Crabtree did not work out with the other receivers at the league's scouting combine Sunday, but said he plans to have his workout for scouts on the school's Lubbock, Texas, campus in March.

" I come here (Sunday) involving my injury report,'' Crabtree said Sunday. "It’s an old injury I’ve been having. I’ve never had any pain in it. I will run my 40. After I do that I’m going to do surgery and I’m looking forward to going to the next level. And that’s it.''

Crabtree did not take any questions, but his short statement did refute a Saturday report that he suffered the injury in workouts to prepare for the combine. Crabtree said he's had the injury for about a year.

Coaches and scouts were informed of the injury, discovered in a medical exam each player receives upon his arrival at the combine. Crabtree is expected to have a screw placed in his foot to repair a slight crack.

Recovery time from that surgery is usually about 10 weeks.

Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith said Saturday he didn't consider the injury to be "career-threatening or anything.''

"You watch players on tape,'' said Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli. "You watch players perform on tape.''

Crabtree caught 134 passes for 1,962 yards and 22 touchdowns in 2007 – all NCAA freshman records – and had 97 receptions for 1,962 and 19 touchdowns this past season.

He played with a right ankle injury this past season.
