STYLE MATTERS: Who rocked the red carpet?
Published February 22, 2009 at 3 p.m.
Judie: The Oscars qualify as our Super Bowl. Evelinda and I settle in on our couches, favorite munchies by our sides (M&Ms for me, Snickers bars for Evelinda). We even wear clean sweats in honor of the occasion. Let the style games begin!
Dress trends
Asymmetric necklines: Heidi Klum, Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) and Virginia Mad sen all sported the look.
One-shoulder: Kate Winslet, in a two-tone black gown, Queen Latifah, in a dress cut perfectly for her generous figure, and Marisa Tomei, in a gown with incredible detailing, all wore one-shoulder styles, a popular look for spring.
Bright colors: Amy Adams, in Carolina Herrera, Madsen, Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia) and Diane Lane chose bright red. Metallics were also popular on the red carpet - gold on Viola Davis and silver on Anne Hathaway and Tina Fey.
White: Evan Rachel Wood, Jessica Biel, Penelope Cruz and Sarah Jessica Parker continued last year's Oscar trend of wearing shades of white and cream.
Jewelry
Things got big and bigger - as in Heidi Klum's ruby and diamond earrings and matching bracelets. (E's heart stopped.) We also loved the killer necklace worn by Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). During an interview, she lifted up her dress, and E swears she got a glimpse of her Spanx bodyshaper. Adams wore a multicolored, multistrand necklace that made her ensemble. Beyonce Knowles wore a beautiful knuckle grazer ring.
Snide remarks corner
* Collagen shortage alert: There's no more filler left in Beverly Hills - it's all in Lisa Rinna's lips.
* Teen singer Miley Cyrus chose a gown with humongous clam shell layers. It looked like she bought it at Little Shop of Horrors.
* Beyonce wore a black and gold brocade gown that was better suited for a mafia princess's matching drapes and bedspread.
* Jessica Biel's dress looked like she had a feedbag attached to the front of her bodice.
* Sarah Jessica Parker was channeling the "good witch of the North" in an oversized ballgown.
* Best actress nominee Melissa Leo's hair matched her dress, both an unattractive shade of burnt orange.
The winners
* Finally, it was a fashion home run for Meryl Streep in an off-the-shoulder silk taupe gown that hugged her curves.
* Heidi Klum, in an asymmetric off-the-shoulder gown, is what dreams are made of.
* Natalie Portman looked fabulous in fuchsia.
* Sophia Loren, representing old Hollywood glamour, took our breath away.
* Kate Winslet: We loved the Yves Saint Laurent black gown. It was nice to see her dressed. Winslet spent most of The Reader naked.
Agree to disagree
* Vanessa Hudgens: J thought the flowers and ruffles on her Marchesa gown looked like something a Barbie doll would wear. E loved it.
* E loved Angelina Jolie's black, classic gown. J says: "boring."
A word on the men
Judie: Thank goodness Mickey Rourke got a haircut. His long, stringy, greasy hair was a real turn-off.
Evelinda: I liked his fashion sense, especially his chains and cowboy boots.
* Ben Kingsley was a sexy beast in white shirt and tie.
