Nuggets report: Relief for Billups

Published February 20, 2009 at 11:59 p.m.

As the Nuggets prepare for the stretch run, coach George Karl is intent on keeping point guard Chauncey Billups as fresh as possible.

Karl said Friday that adding a backup point guard to the roster could allow Billups to sit out practices and conserve energy for the postseason.

"My whole thing with Chauncey is, we've just got to be real careful with him," Karl said. "You don't want Sandy Koufax throwing batting practice."

The Nuggets have worked hard to get under the NBA's luxury-tax threshold, but a team official said enough room remains to sign a player to a prorated minimum contract.

MOORE ON RADAR

The agent for forward Mikki Moore said he spoke with the Nuggets about his client, but the 11-year veteran probably is headed east.

Moore, who averaged 3.5. points and 3.3 rebounds for the Sacramento Kings this season, was waived Thursday and reportedly will sign with the Boston Celtics.

Agent Mark Bartelstein talked to the Nuggets this week; he said Moore likely will make a decision on his future this weekend.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Chris Andersen can't seem to settle on one nickname.

Known as Birdman for his high-flying ability, Andersen recently said he wanted to be known as Birdzilla.

On Friday, he said plans to grow out his hair like Conan the Barbarian.

"Bird-nan. Co-Bird-nan," Andersen said, mashing his nicknames together.
