Top five Shows You Need to Leave the House to See in the Next Month

Published February 19, 2009 at 7 p.m.

Look, we admit woccasionally repeat ourselves here. Is it because we're lazy? Because there are only so many Top 5 lists that exist in the universal consciousness? Or simply because the idea we repeat most frequently - 5 Shows You Need to Leave the House to See in the Next Month - is just a really good one? We're going with the latter, even though the first two also are probably true. So here it is then: 5 Shows You Need to Leave the House to See in the Next Month. We promise we won't dust it off again until April, at least.

1 The Omens, Overcasters, Hawks of Paradise. Feb. 27 at Hi-Dive, 7 S. Broadway. The fuzz-laden fury of The Omens will chase away any lingering winter blahs with a snarl.

2 John Lee Hooker Jr. March 1 at Toad Tavern, 5302 S. Federal Circle, Littleton. The son of the blues legend was playing at Pop's knee since he was 8. But he took the blues too seriously (read: drugs, alcohol, divorce, incarceration) and it took Junior a while to earn his own spot in the biz. This past year he earned his second Grammy nod.

3 Cross Canadian Ragweed, Stephanie Briggs. March 5 at Boulder Theater, 2032 14th St. One of the hottest bands on the club circuit, CCR (not to be confused with the other CCR) are the most popular thing out of Oklahoma since fringe-topped surreys.

4 A Gun That Shoots Knives. March 17 at Old Curtis Street Bar, 2100 Curtis St. Because this is the best band name currently out there - at least, that we can print.

5 All Shall Perish, Abigail Williams, Underneath the Gun. Feb. 26 at The Black Sheep, 2106 E. Platte Ave., Colorado Springs. Kids in the Springs love that hard-core metal. Always have, always will, and the stuff doesn't get much harder than the grind- deathcore of All Shall Perish.
