Rockies report: Quintanilla settling in
Published February 18, 2009 at 4:35 p.m.
Infielder Omar Quintanilla says he will pass on playing for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic.
"I want to take advantage of every opportunity I have to make (the Rockies)," he said.
Quintanilla indicated it would be different if he was set on the Rockies' Opening Day roster. He is the likely backup middle infielder.
As well as being an excellent defensive player, he provides a left-handed alternative if manager Clint Hurdle wants to rest shortstop Troy Tulowitzki or second baseman Clint Barmes, both right-handed hitters.
GRILLI ARRIVES
Right-hander Jason Grilli, delayed in arriving for spring training because of the death of his grandmother, went through the full workout Wednesday.
He will spend a little more than a week with the Rockies, then will leave for the WBC and will pitch for Italy.
HE SAID IT
"What we want to address especially is two goals - winning the division and winning the World Series. We want to let (the players) know that, not mumble it out of the side of our mouth."
Clint Hurdle, Rockies manager, on the team's focus during spring training.
NUMBERS GAME
11 spring training games will be broadcast by KOA-AM (850) - the spring opener against Arizona on Wednesday and games each of the next five Saturdays and Sundays. The games against Seattle in Las Vegas on April 3-4 won't be included in the broadcast package.
