Roosevelt girls keep foot on the gas in win

Published February 17, 2009 at 11:58 p.m.

No second-half fade this time.

The Roosevelt girls basketball team had done that once this season against Longmont, but the Roughriders finished what they started Tuesday against the third-ranked Trojans.

There were some tense moments, but Roosevelt ultimately bounced Longmont from the Class 4A Northern League tournament with a 63-54 semifinals win at the University of Northern Colorado.

Roosevelt, which got 16 points from Alex Morford and 15 from Sendy Valles, will play Broomfield in the title game at 7 p.m. Friday.

"We got in their heads," Valles said.

"They started missing shots and we started making them. We were in the flow of the game and they just got frustrated."

Roosevelt led by 22 points at halftime, but that didn't necessarily mean a win was secure. The Roughriders led Longmont by 15 at halftime Jan. 9 and were outscored 38-14 in the second half in a 76-67 loss.

This time, the unranked Roughriders (19-3) were able to thwart a late Longmont rally despite Valles fouling out and Morford going to the bench after tweaking her right knee.

"We got a little worried, but we're a better team than earlier in the season," Valles said.

Roosevelt sealed it with free- throw shooting by Gabby Ramirez after Longmont closed to 58-52. The Roughriders, up from 3A this season, are among the elite in the 17-team league.

"I'm not going to do a disservice to our kids by saying we don't belong here," Roosevelt coach Randall Longoria said.

Longmont (19-3) had a 48-25 rebounding advantage but couldn't overcome a tumultuous first half in which it trailed 32-10.

"We weren't picking each other up the way we usually do, we were committing turnovers and the way they came out scoring so fast, it kind of scared us," Longmont center Megan Carpenter said. "But I think we thought we could come back and win."

Carpenter (16 points, 14 rebounds) had a strong game before fouling out and fellow sophomore Jamie Katuna led the comeback attempt by scoring all 17 of her points in the second half.

Alyssa Smith added 12 rebounds for Longmont, but the Trojans couldn't make up for being outscored 25-4 in the second quarter.
