Denver-based Newmont Mining Corp., the largest U.S. gold producer, will cut 280 jobs at its Yanacocha mine in Peru, company Vice President Carlos Santa Cruz said today at a briefing in Lima.

Two weeks ago, the company said it was doing away with 38 positions in Nevada because of the economy. At that time, Newmont said about 20 employees likely would be offered severance packages and the remainder reassigned to other positions within the company.
