Raiders again handle Grizzlies
Published February 10, 2009 at 11:57 p.m.
As different as the rematch was, the bottom line was the same.
Almost exactly the same.
The third-ranked Regis Jesuit girls basketball team upended No. 4 ThunderRidge 52-38 on Tuesday night, a score that nearly was a carbon copy of the Raiders' 52-40 triumph last month in the final of the Regis Holiday Hoop Classic.
But the rematch - this one counted in the Class 5A Continental League standings - had a vastly dissimilar feel for both squads.
"This one was different because it's harder coming into ThunderRidge's place," Regis guard Mary Bokenkamp said. "We had to bring a lot of our own energy instead of depending on home- court advantage. The score might have been similar, but I think we played a lot harder this time."
Bokenkamp's three-point barrage in the third quarter put Regis in control as her 3-of-3 performance helped send the Raiders (17-4 overall, 8-1 league) to the fourth quarter with a 10-point lead.
"I hit the first three, then after the second, I was just feeling it," said Bokenkamp, who scored 17 points. "I think we all felt the momentum swinging our way."
ThunderRidge (18-2, 7-1) came out energized and darted to a 15-9 lead. But the Grizzlies scored only 12 points the next two quarters, making only two field goals in that span. They finished with only two baskets in the paint.
"We knew they were going to be fired up after losing once to us, and we knew it was going to be a hostile environment," Regis 6-foot-3 post Diana Rolniak said. "I think we were just excited to have a competitive game. ThunderRidge is an incredible program because they always come to compete."
ThunderRidge, led by 17 points from Carlie Needles, had trouble working the ball inside with the Raiders defense unrelentingly storming.
"It's not really anything great that they did, we just fell out of our offense," said Grizzlies forward Brooke Jelniker, who fouled out with 11 points. "We weren't running our plays, and when we did run them, we weren't running them effectively."
ThunderRidge can't mope because the Grizzlies visit No. 2 Highlands Ranch on Friday. If ThunderRidge wins, it could forge a three-way tie (with Regis) for the league title.
So, will Regis turn into Grizzlies fans?
"We can't really say we're going to root for them to win because we should have beat Ranch if that league championship is what we wanted," Rolniak said, referring to a 56-53 loss at Highlands Ranch last month.
