Smoke fills cockpit of FedEx plane at DIA

Published February 6, 2009 at 11:14 p.m.

A FedEx cargo plane reported having smoke in the cockpit before landing safely at Denver International Airport on Friday night.

There were no injuries, but the two crew members deployed air chutes to leave the plane.

The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m., when a FedEx 727 plane sent out an amber alert, which changed to a red alert when smoke was detected in the cockpit.

The plane was directed to 35L runway, where it landed safely.

Denver fire crews responded to the scene but were not able to determine the source of the smoke.

"We had our crews respond and investigate it," said Greg Champlin, assistant Denver fire chief.

"They were going through the cargo hold and didn't find any heat or smoke. It doesn't sound like anything was found in the containers in the cargo hold."

An electrical short in the system is suspected.

The plane was being towed to the cargo area Friday night, where investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board were expected to examine the plane before its cargo is unloaded.
