Parties clash over job stats

Published February 5, 2009 at 12:05 a.m.

Democrats and Republicans are using dueling statistics about Colorado jobs creation to justify their competing versions of pending economic stimulus legislation.

The White House released state-by-state details of the Democratic-backed plan, saying that it is projected to create or save 63,000 Colorado jobs over two years. But Republicans say their plan, which cuts proposed spending and relies more on tax cuts, would create 108,000 jobs.

Lawmakers from both parties are making an all-out blitz to build public support as the Senate considers a $900 billion package of spending and tax cuts intended to spur job creation.

On Wednesday, the White House said that in Colorado the Democratic legislation would:

* Provide tax cuts of up to $1,000 to nearly 1.9 million workers and their families.

* Make 36,000 families eligible for $2,500 tax credits to pay college costs.

* Offer an extra $100 per month of unemployment insurance benefits to 173,000 workers, and extended benefits to 36,000.
