SYDNEY, Australia (AP) — Everton midfielder Tim Cahill and West Ham defender Lucas Neill were recalled to the Australia squad Tuesday for next week's World Cup qualifier against Japan.
Australia coach Pim Verbeek included only one domestic A-League player in the 22-man squad for the Feb. 11 match in Yokohama after the Socceroos' disappointing scoreless draw with Indonesia last week in a 2011 Asian Cup qualifier.
Australia leads Group A with maximum points from three wins approaching the halfway stage of the last round of Asian qualifying. Japan is on seven points with two wins and a draw
Blackburn Rovers midfielder Vince Grella was also recalled after missing the wins over Uzbekistan, Qatar and Bahrain due to injury.
Former Glasgow Rangers and Newcastle United defender Craig Moore, now with Queensland Roar in the A-League, is the only Australian-based player in the squad. Brett Emerton and Harry Kewell were not considered due to injuries.
Australia beat Japan 3-1 in the group stage of the 2006 World Cup in Germany before losing to eventual champion Italy in the second round. Since then, Japan knocked Australia out of the 2007 Asian Cup quarterfinals in a penalty shootout.
"We know psychologically we have a slight edge over them from the World Cup," Neill told the Australian Associated Press. "We were nowhere near our best in the Asian Cup, it took the luck of penalties to decide the game and unfortunately we lost."
Japan coach Takeshi Okada has named five Europe-based players in a strong Japan squad, including Glasgow Celtic star Shunsuke Nakamura.
