Beeg rallies to win by six as D'Evelyn gets first 4A title

Facing a four-shot deficit to start the second and final day of the Class 4A state golf championship, D'Evelyn senior Brenden Beeg probably wasn't thinking of making them up in one fell swoop.
"(I was trying) not to get wrapped up in the scores," Beeg said of entering Tuesday's round trailing first-round leader Wyndham Clark of Valor Christian.
The four-shot deficit dissipated quickly - by the second hole.
Beeg brought his "A" game and won the individual state title by six shots over Clark.
Beeg shot 4-under 66 to finish at 136. Clark was second at 142.
Moreover, Beeg's two-day score helped D'Evelyn win its first Class 4A state team title in any sport.
Clark, a freshman who was the only player under par in Monday's round with a 66, parred the first hole, as did Beeg.
But Clark's tee shot on the second hole went behind a tree. He had to chip out to the fairway, then hit his approach shot long and three-putted for a triple bogey.
Beeg hit a great approach shot to set himself up for a short birdie putt. Suddenly, the two were tied.
"I thought, I had 16 holes left," Beeg said. "I thought he could come back and shoot a great round, so I had to stay focused on my round."
That he did. Beeg took the lead for good on the fourth hole, then made three more birdies to take a four-shot lead on Clark at the turn.
"Really, nothing went well (Tuesday)," Clark said. "I think I had eight or nine lip-outs for either par or birdie. That's eight or nine strokes."
Beeg had eight birdies, set up by a bounty of great approach shots.
"The past week, I went out with coach John Arnold to Green Gables and worked on my short irons," Beeg said.
Clark shot 6-over 76. His two-day total of 142 put him three shots ahead of Evergreen's Ryan Hooks and Pueblo Centennial's Andrew McCain for second place.
With Beeg's teammates John Ahern and Sam Phillips shooting 152 and 155, D'Evelyn won the team title with a 439, seven shots ahead of Greeley Central.
Montrose, which led after the first day by two shots, was third at 453.
