Golden scripts happy ending
Demons dispatch Ralston Valley to reach semifinals

It wasn't the way a longtime rivalry would end in Hollywood, but the Golden girls soccer team's 3-0 victory against Ralston Valley on Wednesday at the North Area Athletic Complex was a feel-good hit for the Demons.
It puts Golden (15-2-1) in the Class 4A state semifinals Saturday at Englewood Stadium while ending Ralston Valley's eight- year run in 4A. The Mustangs (12- 4-1) will move to Class 5A next season.
Golden dominated the last meeting between the teams as Jefferson County League rivals. Senior forward Lizzie Farrell scored twice, both times deflating the young Mustangs. Farrell's first tally came on a header on Ashley Johnson's corner kick in the 14th minute of the match.
"I thought whoever scored first would have the upper hand in the game," Farrell said. "It was a really good feeling being up 1-0."
Her next goal came on a breakaway in the 52nd minute, effectively knocking the wind out of a Ralston Valley squad that had done well to keep the match close.
"It felt like we had control of the game at that point," Farrell said.
Golden coach Bill Hillen said the second goal was crucial in preventing Ralston Valley from gaining momentum.
"That's not a team you can leave in 1-0," he said. "We knew we needed to get those next couple goals to solidify it. Ralston Valley has really strong players up top and throughout their team that we had to watch out for."
A strong showing by Mustangs goalkeeper Dominique Montijo kept Ralston Valley in it. Golden's shot opportunities on net outnumbered Ralston Valley's 12-1, which Hillen attributed to the Demons defense.
"We knew we had to come out strong, and the defense played phenomenal all the way across," he said.
Freshman Elise Dreiling scored the final goal, with 6:05 remaining in the contest, to clinch Golden's second win this season against the Mustangs. The first one snapped Ralston Valley's 32- match league unbeaten streak.
Ralston Valley coach Stephanie Carpenter had an optimistic outlook about the Mustangs' final 4A match. Her team will graduate only one senior.
"I think a little bit of that rivalry was in our heads tonight, instead of it just being some other team we were playing," she said. "I thought we had about three opportunities (to score) in the first half, but Golden is a good team. They play well as a team and are very aggressive."
Golden will take a 12-match win streak into the final four. The Demons' previous loss was to Air Academy on March 15.
