Regis captures state hockey title

COLORADO SPRINGS—It was the sort of storybook ending siblings dream about when they first lace up a pair of skates to shoot pucks at local rinks or outdoor ponds.
On Saturday, Nick and Gregg Davis of the Regis hockey team made that dream a reality.
The brothers combined for what likely will be the biggest goal they ever produce together, with Nick Davis scoring off an assist from his older brother early in the second overtime to lift Regis to a 3-2 victory against Battle Mountain in one of the more thrilling finishes in the 33-year history of the state championship game.
It was the first state hockey championship for Regis (20-1-1), which ended the season with a 12-game winning streak. Top-seeded Battle Mountain (20-3), which lost the title game for the third time in seven years, had its 18-game winning streak snapped.
“I was astonished. You dream of those things right before you go to sleep,” Nick Davis said. “We’ve had a couple good teams in the past, but we always somehow got knocked out in the first round. There was not one guy who carried us through the playoffs. It was a good team effort. We had fourth-liners score…we had guys come off the bench and get one good play a game. It really was just a great team effort.”
Regis needed every ounce of endurance and effort to outlast Battle Mountain. By the time the second overtime began the top players on each team were visibly tired, allowing for a role player like Nick Davis to take advantage of his fresher legs. Nick Davis’ heroics earned the freshman the Rocky Mountain News’ title game Most Valuable Player Award.
“Having those two on the ice is magic,” Regis coach Dan Woodley said. “Nick didn’t have very many shifts—he’s our utility player. He’s a fine player and deserves his ice time, but he’s who I use in the pinch situations. We needed a spark, and he did exactly what we preach on the bench—get the puck to the net and good things will happen.
“My assistant coach, Terry Ott, was pushing to get (Nick) on the ice because he was chomping at the bit. He had the fresh legs and only had about four shifts the whole game. We put him out there and he was quick to the puck.”
The game was tied 1-1 going into the third period when Battle Mountain made a crucial mistake early in the frame, as Taylor Bearsto and Zac Brust were sent to the box for concurrent penalties, giving the Raiders a five-on-three advantage for a full 2 minutes.
While Battle Mountain officially killed the penalty, its two guilty parties had barely stepped through the penalty box door when Regis’ John Booren stuffed a shot past Huskies goaltender Kalen Burnett, giving the Raiders a 2-1 lead.
Battle Mountain answered with 6:36 remaining, tying the score at 2-2 when junior Geoff Funk collected a loose puck between the circles and beat Regis goaltender David Nowicki, who appeared to make the stop only to have the puck trickle through his pads.
Nowicki, though, made amends in the first overtime, stopping all six Battle Mountain shots in the period, including a breakaway by the Huskies’ second-leading scorer, Gustav Philipson, to give the Davis brothers an opportunity to secure the victory and the state title.
“Stopping those breakaways, getting it done, that kid is a fantastic kid,” Woodley said. “He’s one of my favorite people in the whole world, because he’s not only a great kid and a good goalie, but he is a special individual.”
