FROM THE BOOKSHELF

* The book: 100 Classic Hikes in Colorado by Scott S. Warren

* Cost: $21.95 (The Mountaineers Books)

* Why it's worth a read: This is the third edition of this popular hiking guide, and it's better than ever. The "100 classic" concept makes it as enjoyable to browse as it is to actually use it out on the trail. Author Scott Warren divides the state into regions - eastern plains; northern, central and southern mountains; and plateau lands - forcing readers to rethink their geography (the central mountains chapter stretches from Colorado Springs to the Grand Mesa).

* The best part: Warren offers a variety of hikes from easy to strenuous and he points out a trail's highlights in an introductory chart, detailed trail descriptions and color photographs. Are you a waterfall fan? Check out Hanging Lake. Rock art? Head to Delores River Canyon.

* Who should read it: Anyone who hikes Colorado or dreams about it.
