PARKER: Larimer Square puts on a shiny face for Democratic convention
Published July 23, 2008 at 12:05 a.m.
If you're in Larimer Square at the beginning of August, make sure you look up.
The square will be flying $5,000 worth of flags in honor of the Democratic National Convention.
"We're putting up every state plus the territories in the order in which they have come into the union," said spokeswoman Margaret Ebeling. "And in keeping with the spirit of the DNC, we chose a locally based supplier that's a union shop and a veteran-owned company (Show Your Colors flag company)."
In addition to the flags, Lari mer Square folks are working on a light grid suspended above the shopping square that will look like a ceiling of red, white and blue LED energy-efficient bulbs. The light show will cost roughly $20,000, Ebeling said.
"It's a pretty big investment, but we're trying to put on a bright, shiny face for the international stage that's coming to Denver," she said.
What didn't fly, however, was a plan to set up giant tents to house DNC events. Larimer Square looked into building four tents on land owned by Buzz Geller and bordered by Speer Boulevard, Market, 14th and Larimer streets.
TAMAYO TV: Larimer Square is the place to be if you're CBS4 News. News director Tim Wieland tells me that the local station will be parked on Tamayo's rooftop, 14th and Larimer, during the convention.
"Reporters who are doing stories on the delegate events, the parties and the impact of the convention on the city will report live from this location," Wieland said. "Ed Greene may also do his weather reports live from this location at 5, 6 and 10 p.m."
The law firm Kamlet Shepherd & Reichert will take over most of the restaurant to entertain clients and guests, but have agreed to let CBS4 camp out on the rooftop patio that looks over the Pepsi Center.
DALY DOUBLE: When Rocky reader Tim Daly read his name listed among the celebrities expected here for the Democratic National Convention in this space on Tuesday, he was taken aback . . . for a second.
"Penny, as the local political hack named Tim Daly (and not the Hollywood Tim Daly) I for one brief moment was very excited to see my name among all the luminaries, and then reality set in," Denver's Daly wrote in an e-mail. "But for all my fans (well, my wife, Melanie, and my kids) I will be at the convention."
He promised me a picture if our Daly runs into his "Hollywood double."
EAVESDROPPING on two women at the Westin Westminster: "She's a serious candidate for What Not to Wear."
"And what not to hair."
