Nets send G Williams to Warriors for pick
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The New Jersey Nets sent point guard Marcus Williams to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday for future draft considerations.
Golden State will send the Nets a first-round draft pick if it is higher than No. 14 in 2011, No. 11 in 2012 or No. 10 in 2013. If the Nets do not get any of these picks, the Nets will receive Golden State's second-round picks in 2013 and 2015.
Williams was a first-round selection of the Nets in the 2006 NBA Draft. The former Connecticut standout played in 132 games in his two seasons with the Nets, averaging 6.4 points and 3.0 assists.
"Marcus is a good young ballplayer with outstanding skills," said Thorn. "This transaction allows us to acquire another future asset, and we wish Marcus the best in his basketball future."
With the acquisition of Williams, the Warriors fill a need for a backup point guard.
Monta Ellis is expected to become the starter for the Warriors, who lost Baron Davis to the Los Angeles Clippers in free agency. The only other point guard on the Warriors' roster after Davis' departure was unproven youngster C.J. Watson.
"We felt that we needed to acquire another point guard and a player who is capable of running our offense and expanding our depth," said Chris Mullin, the Warriors' top basketball executive. "We feel that Marcus can contribute to our cause next season."
Williams made the NBA's all-rookie second team in 2007. He missed the first 23 games last season with a broken foot.
