Tell No One

* Unrated

* Running time: 125 minutes

* The stars: Kristin Scott-Thomas, Francois Cluzet, Marie- Josee Croze, Andre Dussollier, Jean Rochefort, Marina Hands

* The story: Eight years after his wife was allegedly savagely murdered, a pediatrician receives an anonymous e-mail that directs him to a link where real- time video reveals a woman who looks like his wife in the middle of a crowd. The e-mail instructs him to tell no one.

* What the critics said: "Suffice for potential audiences to know that this thriller is both terrifying and subtle, punctuated with a beautifully choreographed chase scene and sprinkled liberally with women who possess a particular brand of breezy, sharp-featured chic," wrote Moira Macdonald of The Seattle Times.

Elsa & Fred

* Rated: PG

* Running time: 108 minutes

* The stars: Manuel Alexandre, China Zorrilla, Blanca Portillo, Roberto Carnaghi

* The story: A widow and a widower - one who was content keeping quietly retired, the other embracing a carpe diem attitude - meet after a fender bender and rekindle their passion for love and life after visiting the Trevi Fountain in Rome, the landmark from Fellini's La Dolce Vita.

* What the critics said: "Engagingly acted and more than a little corny, Elsa & Fred is best-enjoyed as a sampling of China Zorrilla's combustible energy and still-dazzling screen presence," wrote Jeannette Catsoulis of The New York Times.

UP Ripple Effect

* Rated: R

* Running time: 87 minutes

* The stars: Philippe Caland, Forest Whitaker, Virginia Madsen, Minnie Driver

* The story: A fashion designer, besieged by crises in both his marriage and his business, blames bad karma and sets off to correct a wrongdoing from 15 years ago.

* What the critics said: "The result is a sort of New Age comic book with some highly original moments," wrote Lisa Nesselson of Daily Variety. "(The movie's) message about pitfalls en route to being at one with oneself and the universe shines through, despite recurring rough edges."

Alexandra

* Unrated

* Running time: 92 minutes

* The stars: Galina Vishnevskaya, Vasily Shevtsov, Raisa Gichaeva

* The story: A woman in the twilight of her life embarks on a special journey: to visit a grandson she hasn't seen in seven years at his Army camp in war- torn Chechnya.

* What the critics said: "Alexandra isn't a difficult film, but neither is it obvious. It's a beautiful, eerie work of art about life and death and the love a grandson expresses when he plaits his grandmother's hair," wrote Manohla Dargis of The New York Times.

Note by Note: The Making of the Steinway L1037

* Unrated

* Running time: 81 minutes

* The story: This documentary follows the creation of a Steinway concert grand, No. L1037, from forest floor to concert hall, tracing the piano's 12-month journey that includes 12,000 parts and 450 craftsmen in a celebration of craftsmanship and the bond behind a musician and an instrument.

* What the critics said: "It's most effective when, beneath a soundtrack full of Bach and 19th- century Romantic piano music, the camera marvels at the industrial ballet taking place on the factory floor," wrote Jeremy Eichler of The Boston Globe. "Passages like this make Note by Note feel like a love letter to a vanishing mode of production, with more than a hint of elegy. The factory comes off as a bastion of tradition-minded craftsmanship in a soulless, digitized world. The truth is, of course, more complicated, but this film will at least make you look differently at the next Steinway grand you encounter on a concert stage."
