Convergences/ Transitions

* What: paintings by Stephen Dinsmore and woodcuts by Jean Gumpper

* Where and when: William Havu Gallery, 1040 Cherokee St., through July 19

* Closer to the earth: If the work by Jerry Wingren and Bonnie Stumpf at Walker Fine Art is all about respect for material, the shows at William Havu Gallery focus on the land.

Nebraska-based artist Stephen Dinsmore concentrates on the sweeping moment, horizon lines that fill a canvas with broad perspectives and the skillful use of color in presenting earth, sky and water. In the oil that lends its name to this exhibition, that includes a slash of purple on the horizon and a beautifully mottled sky. In a work such as Crow's Call, Dinsmore concentrates on bringing snow to life - not as easy a task as it sounds, since that material is never pure white. As a break from the feeling that you're lost in the country, Havu also is showing two Dinsmore still lifes that draw from a different palette and different impulses.

In the back gallery and mezzanine space are numerous woodcuts by Colorado Springs-based Jean Gumpper that re- mind of her mastery of the technique. Especially intricate is the woodcut and pochoir Midwinter Walk, which evokes the winter sun's long shadows.
