Ousted Colorado Rep. Marilyn Musgrave has received a dubious honor from change.org.

The online media network, which raises awareness about social issues like gay rights and global warming, named Musgrave one of its Top Five Villains and Villainesses of 2008.

"In what may be the last year that Marilyn Musgrave is relevant, this Colorado Congresswoman continued to champion her anti-gay positions at all costs — including the cost of her Congressional seat," wrote Mike Jones, change.org's gay rights editor.

"Musgrave was the author in the House of Representatives of a proposed Constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage, and famously told the Family Research Council that fighting gay marriage was the most important priority our country faced," he wrote. "Well, with legislative priorities like that, it's no wonder that Musgrave was defeated this year by Democrat Betsy Markey. Colorado voters grew tired of her schtick, and now Congress has one less virulently anti-gay member."

In a telephone interview, Jones said that among a large number of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists, Musgrave is the "symbolic presence" behind efforts to ban gay marriage.

"She's the one that's pushed the constitutional amendment to define marriage harder than anyone else in the House of Representatives," he said. "Because she's been such a force for what I would consider marriage discrimination, that's why she made the list."

Efforts to reach Musgrave today were unsuccessful.

No one answered the phone at her Washington, D.C., office and it doesn't accept messages, and the phone at her Loveland office has been disconnected or is no longer in service. Musgrave has kept a low profile, not often commenting publicly, since Election Day.

By the way, change.org's Mike Jones is not the same Mike Jones who allegedly had a highly publicized sexual relationship with evangelical leader Ted Haggard, the former leader of New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

"I had forgotten all about that, but man, for about six months, that made my life hell," said change.org's Mike Jones.

"Either people thought I was him or the rapper that's like really big into gangster rap, neither of which I am," he said, laughing.

In addition to Musgrave, others who made the Top 5 list included Pope Benedict XVI for his "ardent string of anti-gay rhetoric" and Jamaican reggae artist Bounty Killer, "who continually calls for homosexuals to be murdered in his songs."
