The Cheyenne Mountain hockey team delivered the type of big hits and timely goals no other club has been able to produce against the top-ranked Regis Jesuit Raiders.
If not for an unfortunate turnover caused by surface issues on the ice, the Indians might have scored an upset against the defending state champs.
Instead, Regis broke a 3-3 tie with two third-period goals in a 31-second span, then held on for a 5-4 victory.
Sophomore Nick Davis led the Raiders (6-0) with two goals and one assist, scoring what proved to be the winner midway through the third period.
"It really says that no matter who we put out there, we are going to come through," Davis said. "Whether it's the third or fourth or second line, I think they are all equal. It's just who is going to get that lucky bounce or make that good play to score that big goal. I think anyone can get it."
Regis took what appeared to be an insurmountable lead when Gregg Davis and Zeke Yslas scored goals 38 seconds apart in the first period.
The Raiders had allowed only two goals in their first five games, and Cheyenne Mountain had reason to be further demoralized when Nick Davis was given an uncontested look 47 seconds into the second after the Indians lost the puck when it stuck in a wet spot on the ice.
After Davis converted to give the Raiders a 3-0 lead, the game was delayed momentarily as the officials worked on the ice.
"It absolutely became a lucky break for us," Regis coach Dan Woodley said. "I specifically asked the officials prior to the game to take extra long in between periods because the ice wasn't setting up. I was told they would take care of that. That lucky break went our way, but it just as easily could have gone theirs. It's a shame in such a great game that had to be one of the reasons we won."
Cheyenne Mountain, though, rallied behind two Trentt Houghton-to-Jez Murphy goals to pull within 3-2 at the end of the second, and Justin King scored the equalizer 53 seconds into the third.
Regis recaptured the lead on a blast from just inside the blue line by defenseman Nick Mohr and padded the advantage on Davis' second goal moments later.
The Indians (3-2) pulled within 5-4 on a goal by Trevor Isbell with 2:27 remaining, but Regis held on down the stretch.
"We competed all night and never quit," Cheyenne Mountain coach Mike Provenzano said. "We don't have the depth Regis has, but I have kids with a lot of heart that are going to battle as hard as they can."
