The Fairview boys basketball team is putting together a pretty impressive resume during the early part of the season.

Not only have the second- ranked Knights already knocked off two-time defending state champion Denver East, but Friday night they delivered a beatdown to No. 3 Regis Jesuit in the championship game of the Fairview Festival, rolling the Raiders 77-53 in front of a packed house.

Fairview (6-0) scored the first 11 points of the second half to open a 45-33 lead, then added a 17-0 run that spanned the end of the third and start of the fourth quarters to blow open the game.

Senior guard Beau Gamble said the Knights' superior depth wore down the Raiders in the final two quarters.

"We have the most depth in the state," said Gamble, who scored 15 points on 6-for-8 shooting. "Regis has seven or eight great players; we have 12. We have 12 guys and can pick up the defensive intensity whenever we want."

Fairview's defense also put the clamps on Bud Thomas, who had 12 points, four rebounds and five steals in the first two quarters.

But with the Knights focusing on him after the intermission, Thomas was held to one rebound, a steal and zero points on 0-for-5 shooting in the final two quarters.

"I don't know if it was fatigue on his part or if we defended him really well," Fairview coach Frank Lee said. "Steven Cartwright and Tyler Branham played extremely well defensively on him."

The Raiders (5-1) also played the second half without leading scorer Joey Ptasinski, who was bloodied after taking an elbow to his nose with 48 seconds remaining in the first half.

Jonathan Morse, the Knights' hulking 6-foot-7 post player, delivered the inadvertent elbow while scoring on a putback that put Fairview up for good at 34- 33.

"Certainly, (Ptasinski) could have helped, but whether it was the difference between winning and losing, I don't know," Regis Jesuit coach Ken Shaw said.

"(Fairview) deserved it. They certainly controlled the tempo of the game. Their pressure was big and turned the momentum of the game."

Morse added 14 points and six rebounds for the Knights, who had 10 players score in the contest.

Despite the quick start, Lee said the Knights still have a long way to go to reach their goals this season.

"This means we won two tournaments, and that's all it means," Lee said. "We're going to keep working on it, because we just want to get better every day."
