Democrat Betsy Markey and Republican Marilyn Musgrave raised more than $1 million combined in the final weeks of their contentious race for Congress.
Markey easily unseated incumbent Musgrave in the battle for the 4th Congressional District seat that drew more than $5.6 million of campaign contributions.
Markey took in almost $700,000 of campaign donations in late October and early November compared with about $400,000 for Musgrave, according to finance reports filed Thursday.
That left both candidates with about $2.8 million of donations, according to the filings.
Major contributors of $5,000 each to Markey included Carpenters Legislative Improvement Fund, Emily's List, the HillPac political committee, the Machinist Non-Partisan Political League, the New Democrat Coalition Political Action group, the United Auto Workers PAC, the United Association PAC and the Women's Political Committee.
She also got several donations from other Democratic members of Congress and their political committees.
Musgrave got $5,000 donations from the Action Committee for Rural Electrification, the Citizens United Political Victory Fund, the Exxon Mobile PAC, the Liberty PAC, the National Association of Realtors and the National Pro-Life Alliance.
The Musgrave-Markey battle was not the most expensive congressional race in Colorado this year. The race for the 2nd Congressional District seat won by Democrat Jared Polis garnered almost $11 million of donations.
Polis put in almost $6 million of his own money into the race, including $222,000 during the final weeks of the campaign, according to campaign reports.
