A teenager pleaded not guilty Monday in the beating death of a 78-year-old man this year.

Chase A. McGraw, 18, and his alleged accomplice, Laura C. Childress, 38, whom he described as his girlfriend, face several charges, including felony murder, arson and aggravated robbery.

The two were being held without bail Monday in the Adams County Jail.

Witnesses told Adams County sheriff's detectives that the victim, Bob Lee Moreland, 78, was helping the struggling couple by letting them stay at his home just outside Brighton.

Moreland was found dead on June 15 in the home, which had been set on fire, according to documents.

Detectives said they believe McGraw and Childress used a credit card belonging to Moreland at least three times after his body was found.

Witnesses told police that Childress had been stealing money from Moreland and forging his checks, detectives wrote in an affidavit.
