Smashburger today announced two agreements to expand the Denver-based fast-casual burger restaurant into new terrain including Oklahoma and the Western Slope.
Smashburger said it signed its second franchise with Aerios LLC, which operates some 30 other franchises including Subway and Dairy Queen, to open new stores in South Dakota, Kansas City, Mo., as well as the Western Slope communities of Rifle, Steamboat and Durango.
In a statement, Smashburger President Scott Crane said Aerios’ focus on western Colorado and South Dakota will put the restaurant “in cities that often get overlooked for development by other restaurant chains, creating a pent-up demand for a quality, fast-casual burger experience. Smashburger looks forward to meeting that demand.”
Separately, Smashburger said it signed its first joint venture agreement with WTO Acquisition, a group of real estate developers and a franchise operator. WTO plans to build restaurants in Wichita, Kan., and in several Oklahoma cities.
Both agreements come after Smashburger announced earlier this year that it had signed a 30-franchise deal to expand into New Jersey. Smashburger has seven company-owned stores in Colorado, with plans to grow to as many as 12 by the end of the year.
