Regional scene: Past champions top field for Senior Open

The HealthONE Colorado Senior Open will welcome a field of 93 professionals and 63 amateurs to Green Valley Ranch Golf Club on Wednesday.

The three-day tournament ends Sept. 5, with the field competing for $50,000 in prize money.

Past Colorado Senior Open champions Dave Arbuckle (2007), Mike Zaremba (2005) and three-time Colorado Open champion Billy Loeffler (1991, 1993, 2004) highlight the field, which also includes low amateurs Mark Franz (2007) and Kent Moore (2006).

Colorado Women's Golf Association's Senior Stroke Play Championship at Boulder Country Club, recording rounds of 78 and 80. She also earned the super senior division title.

SKY SOX WIN Colorado Springs' Jayson Nix singled in the ninth, stole second and, after the bases were loaded, scored the winning run on a walk in a 5-4 Pacific Coast League victory against the Tucson Sidewinders at Security Service Field.

DU GOLFERS NO. 11 The University of Denver women's golf team was selected No. 11 in the Golfworld/Nike Division I preseason coaches' poll. Junior Stephanie Sherlock and senior Katie Kempter were selected as two of the top 50 players to watch.

BUFFALOES BENEFIT The University of Colorado women's soccer team is joining Kick for the Cure as part of the upcoming seventh annual Colorado Soccer Classic presented by Qdoba Mexican Grill. The Buffaloes will wear pink jerseys when they play Gonzaga at 4 p.m. Sept. 19 and Fresno State at 1 p.m. Sept. 21.

GRIZZLIES TOPS The Adams State College men's and women's cross country teams each were voted No. 1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's preseason polls.

The Western State men and women each were second in both polls. In the men's poll, Colorado Mines was third, Metro State fifth, CU-Colorado Springs sixth, Fort Lewis eighth, Regis 10th and Colorado Christian 11th.

On the women's side, Mesa State was third, UCCS fourth, Fort Lewis sixth, Metro State seventh, Colorado Mines eighth, Regis ninth, CSU-Pueblo 11th and Colorado Christian 13th.

NEW TIGERS COACH Erin Thacker, who has served as a Division III intern in the Colorado College athletics department and assistant softball coach since August 2007, has been appointed interim coach.
