PARKER: East Colfax bar owner is star-struck

Published August 27, 2008 at 8:46 p.m.

STARGAZING: Jesse Morreale, owner of RockBar - temporarily name-changed to BarackBar in honor of the DNC - was over the moon late Tuesday night.

As the official after-hours hospitality site for The Creative Coalition, a gang of 25 Hollywood types here to study issues this election year, Morreale has seen a host of stellar stars descend on the East Colfax joint.

"Susan Sarandon is in my bar," he gushed, "can you believe it?"

Sarandon, along with Tim Daly, Anne Hathaway, (the extremely charming) Giancarlo Esposito, Dana Delany, Spike Lee, Rachael Leigh Cook, Richard Schiff, Josh Lucas, Alan Cumming, Gloria Reuben and Tony Goldwyn snuggled into booths in the roped-off area inside the '70s retro bar, some sipping Patron Silver gratis and munching cupcakes.

When Sarandon, a tequila drinker, confessed to Morreale that she had never tried Mezcal (the name of his nearby restaurant), the bar owner whipped out a bottle of Del Maguey for the movie star's sampling. "She loved it," he said.

Other BarackBar highlights: "Anne Hathaway came up to me at the bar and said, 'So I need to stand next to you so the bartenders will pay attention to me,' " Morreale said. "I said, 'Really?' "

Esposito took a spin down Colfax on Mezcal manager Brian Rossi's Harley.

MOVING MOMENTS: Prior to the BarackBar retreat, The Creative Coalition folks took the stage at Comedy Works to read quotable quotes about hope, dreams and the future. It was a cocktail party co-hosted by Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck, Steve Farber's American Transplant Association as well as TCC.

Farber spoke passionately about the need for more people to designate themselves organ donors on their driver's licenses. More than four years ago, Denver's power broker received a kidney transplant from his eldest son, Gregg.

Each one of the TCC members stepped up to the mic and read thoughtful words from some of our greatest writers and philosophers.

Menzel, the opening act, was followed by Ashanti, who I'm told brought down the house. "The dance floor was packed from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.," my spy said. "The favorite item on the menu was the buffalo sliders."
