Once you wade through the traffic detours, the protests and security check points, this Democratic National Convention in Denver thing ain't so bad.

Actually, it could be a real good thing when you consider that in recent years, the DNC has provided good karma for the host city's sports scene.

Check out these DNC-related sports facts, starting in 1972 with Miami, which hosted both the Democratic and Republican conventions. That same year, the Dolphins posted a 17-0 record and won Super Bowl VII.

New York hosted the DNC in 1976 and 1980. The Yankees went to the '76 World Series (after beating Kansas City, which hosted the RNC). The Islanders won the Stanley Cup for the 1980-81 season -- their second of four consecutive championships.

San Francisco was host site for the DNC in 1984. That year, the 49ers went 15-1 and won Super Bowl XIX.

Bad news: no world titles for DNC host Atlanta in 1988. New York hosted again in 1992. No championships, but the Knicks did win 60 games and went to the Eastern Conference finals in the '92-'93 season.

In 1996 Chicago hosted the DNC, and the Phil Jackson-coached Bulls won the NBA title for the 1996-97 season. In 2000 Los Angeles was host city for the DNC. The Jackson-coached Lakers won the 2000-01 NBA title.

Boston hosted the DNC in 2004. The Red Sox won the World Series that fall, and the New England Patriots won XXXIX.

Going way back, Chicago hosted the convention in 1940 and the Bears won the NFL championship. In 1948 Philadelphia hosted the DNC and the Eagles won an NFL title.

So perk up, Denver Sports Fan. A Super Bowl trip for the Broncos might be in the future, if not another a run to the Stanley Cup for the Avalanche. Don't count on, ahem, Barack-tober this year for our baseball team.

But with a little DNC karma, the Nuggets might be in line to win their playoff series since Bill Clinton held office in 1994.
