What Happens in Vegas

Rated: PG-13, 99 minutes, $29.99, 20th Century Fox

After too much fun in Las Vegas, a slacker and an over- achiever wake up married. But before they can get an annulment, the slacker husband wins a $3 million jackpot with the bride's quarter. Back home in New York, a divorce court gives them six months to work things out, with the first quitter losing the cash.

Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz are "undeniably appealing" in the lead roles and the supporting players are amusing scene-stealers, writes Joe Leydon of Variety, but it's still a basic cookie-cutter romantic comedy.

Redbelt

Rated: R, 99 minutes, $27.96, Sony Pictures

Grade: C+

What's the result when playwright David Mamet, holder of a purple belt in jujitsu, makes a martial-arts movie? A rehash of concepts of control, manipulation and one-upmanship that Mamet has explored in plays such as Glengarry Glen Ross and Speed-the-Plow, writes Associated Press critic Christy Lemire.

Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a moral jujitsu instructor forced into the ring for a large purse to save his martial-arts studio. Though the title match plays out differently from those of, say, Rocky or The Karate Kid, it's still trite and leads to a conclusion that's more laughable than poignant, Lemire says.
