U.S. men's basketball team avoids second Greece spill

— In many polls, Plan 9 from Outer Space is regarded as the worst movie of all time. Among more recent films, there is Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow.

But members of the USA Basketball senior men’s team have no doubt about the worst thing they’ve seen on a screen.

It was Sept. 1, 2006: Greece 101, Team USA 95.

That’s when this team, put together in 2006 for a three-summer run, lost its only game so far out of 22. Before the rematch Thursday at the Olympics, coach Mike Krzyzewski made sure his team was reminded.

“We watched (the game Thursday) morning, (Wednesday) and pretty much every time we watch the scouting report,” forward Chris Bosh said. “That fueled us a little bit. I think Coach “K” and the coaches knew what they were doing.”

Did they ever. With Bosh and guard Kobe Bryant each scoring 18 points, the Americans walloped Greece 92-69 to increase their Olympic mark to 3-0 and, with two games remaining in pool play, assured they will advance to the quarterfinals.

“Embarrassment,” Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony said of the previous meeting. “That’s all I remember. Embarrassment. We had that in the back of our minds. ... But we came out here and did what we were supposed to do.”

Anthony is one of six Team USA players who appeared in the Greek tragedy. Other holdovers include Dwyane Wade, who totaled 17 points and six steals Thursday, and LeBron James, who scored 13.

“We knew we had to clean up our pick-and-roll defense,” James said. “They ran pick-and-roll 40-some- odd times (in 2006).”

Team USA didn’t get off to the best start, trailing 11-7. At that time, point guard Jason Kidd had gone to the bench after picking up three fouls in the first 2:25, the earliest he can recall that happening to him in a game.

But the Americans broke open the game in the second quarter. Throwing down fast-break dunks, they outscored Greece 31-16 for a 51-32 halftime lead.

Anthony said defensive “communication” was the key to slowing the pick-and-roll. Anthony helped out with two steals and six rebounds, although he scored only eight points.

“I don’t really have to score too much,” said Anthony, much less of an offensive option than the previous two summers. “I score when I have to. And when the ball comes to me, knock a shot down or two.”

Heading into the game Saturday against Spain, Anthony is averaging 7.7 points in the Olympics. With Spain also 3-0, Bryant called it “another test for us.”

There is one drawback for the Americans. Spain has the motivation of the U.S. being the only team to beat it in the 2004 Olympics, knocking out the Spaniards in the quarterfinals.

Team USA coaches will have to think of a ploy other than showing a horror film.
