The Sculpture Show: Figure and Pattern
* What: Work by local and international sculptors
* Where and when: Emmanuel Gallery, Auraria Campus; through Thursday
* Of note: Closing reception 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with a metal pour toward the conclusion
* Everybody: Emmanuel Gallery this summer turned its attention to sculpture in conjunction with the Western Cast Iron Art Conference in June. The result is a mixed-bag show that combines impressive work with some that doesn't quite hit the mark.
In the first category, put two- and three-dimensional pieces by Manuel Neri; abstract sculpture by Charles Parson installed in the gallery and near the entry; Rian Kerrane's iron and plaster recollection of wallpaper; Mark Guilbeau's ingenious cast iron WMD; and a couple of memorable early vessel-related works by Michael Brohman that date from several years ago. That's downstairs (or outside).
The compact upstairs space for the most part contains smaller work, some of which seems ambiguous in intent (sand-cast iron objects by the innovative Viviane Le Courtois), and some that seem to have migrated from another show (the glass, dirt, salt, bamboo and thread installation Aka I Ito, by Yuko Yagisawa).
Still, there's good news here: This exhibition marks the announcement of a conservation plan for all sculpture on the Auraria Campus and the intent to create an Auraria Sculpture Park Biennial in 2010, when the conservation is complete. Let's hope this plan includes installing plaques that identify each work.
