The U.S. Forest Service has begun a fresh review of the potential environmental impact of a developer’s plans to build a road to a proposed village next to Wolf Creek Ski Area.

The extra scrutiny for the plan by Texas billionaire Red McCombs follows the agency’s settlement of a lawsuit earlier this year. Environmental groups had alleged the developers tried to influence the outcome of the previous environmental analysis and road-access rulings.

The Forest Service reiterated it longstanding position on the road issue.

“The question is not whether access will be provided, but rather where and how the access will occur,” said Dan Dallas, forest supervisor for the Rio Grande National Forest.”

The developers have proposed building a village with housing and commercial businesses to serve as many as 10,000 people. It would sit on 287.5 acres of land near the remote and rustic Wolf Creek Ski Area.

The new process will also give the public another opportunity to submit comments on the development and its potential impact but the agency has yet to announce a schedule.
