Fishing hot spot: Poudre River

* Why here? The river is in prime condition for fishing and wading. It offers good dry fly fishing along the northern Front Range.

* What's hot? Pale-morning-dun mayflies, red quills and caddis are the primary hatches. Some small stoneflies also are around, and terrestrial insects are on the water.

* Fly box: PMD and red-quill dry flies, hopper patterns and Elk-Hair-Caddis; Pheasant Tail and Hare's Ear nymphs if trout are not rising.

* Best times: Mornings for mayflies, dinner time for caddis.

* How to get there: From Denver, travel north on Interstate 25 to Fort Collins. Turn onto U.S. 287 and head northwest to Colorado 14, which generally parallels the river upstream.
