Mustangs just miss, tie Eagles

Published April 29, 2008 at 10:24 p.m.

Alexander Dawson's Alyssa Beck was the first to admit her thoughts Tuesday were a little scary as the clock wound down in the Mustangs' 1-1 double overtime tie against Faith Christian, ranked No. 2 in Class 3A.

With 24 seconds remaining in regulation, Beck kicked a blistering shot at the Faith Christian goal from 20 yards out that went just out of the reach of leaping Eagles goalie Shelby Bartusek. With the tie, Alexander Dawson, ranked No. 3 in 3A, ends the regular season with a 13-1-1 record.

Faith Christian (10-3-2) scored in the opening moments of the game, which was played on Dawson's soft, grass field. Ariane Lukens scored the Eagles' only goal 3:22 into the nonleague game.

Each team had only two shots in the two overtime periods and only Barstusek had to make a save.

"It means a lot to have played well against them," Beck said. "We have lost to them every year, so far by a good amount. It was hard, too, not to have our leading scorer (Olivia Wagner) and our starting goalie (Laura Harris) out of the game. But Erin Galloway did a great job in goal and she definitely save some hard shots."

Beck had the only two shots of the second half, but the last one certainly counted most.

Lukens felt good about her goal, which came off consecutive passes from Kate Fonte and Athena Lopez. But with all the offensive pressure Faith mustered in the game, she was surprised it did not get at least one more goal.

"I thought we played hard all but the last minute of the game," Lukens said. "We just kind of let up. I got a great pass from my teammates on the right side and I was able to put it in."

Faith Christian coach Amber Jenkins knew it was going to be a tough game against a solid opponent.

"It definitely was not the result we should have had with the quality of play that we have," Jenkins said. "We just had a difficult time finishing today. In the grand scheme of things, the tie does not hurt. I'm pretty sure we could see them again."
