Collins wins Forey
Monarch senior leads team to title over Cherry Creek

Brooke Collins will be remembered for conquering windy weather and a tough course Monday at the Ashley Forey golf tournament.
Still, the Monarch senior would like to forget a couple of hiccups during her round. She double bogeyed the 12th hole but really encountered trouble on the par-4 sixth that measured 357 yards.
The sixth hole at Rolling Hills Country Club causes problems for many because a water-filled ditch makes the players hit irons off the tee. But Collins, a huge hitter despite her size, grabbed driver and paid the price. She described her triple-bogey 7.
"The drive hit the tree and fell in the water. I hit a terrible 6-iron, a terrible sand wedge, had a terrible putt and another terrible putt. I was pretty mad because I could have had a really good round without those two holes," she said.
No matter, the rest of the field was encountering trouble as well. Collins shot a 5-over-par 77 and still finished three shots ahead of Kacie Curd of Cherry Creek and Olivia Garard of Kent Denver.
Curd also was considering what could have been a fabulous finish on a par 5. She used driver and 5-wood to get on in two but missed the putt for eagle.
Garard has been nearly as hot as Collins, finishing second behind Littleton's Becca Huffer at the recent Glenmoor tournament and fourth, with a 76, at Monarch's tournament.
Collins, who won the Monarch event, played strong golf on the other 15 holes of the Forey (No. 16 was under repair and all golfers were granted a par there).
She also led the way as Monarch won the team title, duplicating the double achieved last year by Tracy Saracino and Cherry Creek.
Collins also could commiserate with fourth-place finisher Elizabeth Kresock, who also encountered a disastrous hole in the early going but somehow recovered to shoot 81.
"I went bogey, bogey, bogey, (quadruple bogey)," said Kresock, of Colorado Academy. "I just had a really bad start, but did well from there."
Monarch's team win was helped greatly by Coyotes senior Jacqui Ball, the most improved golfer in Class 5A this season.
Ball shot 82 to finish fifth. She said an elbow injury caused her problems last season but now she's playing smart golf, too.
"I'm not getting into any trouble, so I'm at least giving myself a shot at par," Ball said.
Monarch's 250-shot total edged defending state champion Cherry Creek by two shots.
The Bruins still showed depth, though, as Curd was the team's No. 4 player, and Saracino (85) and Kasha Scott (87) finished in the top 20 despite problems with their short games.
Jen Seltz of D'Evelyn, the daughter of Rolling Hills golf director Jeff Seltz, aced the 133-yard 13th hole.
