MEITUS: Hit a homer as ballpark chef

A moment like this might have happened last season as the Rockies made their historic run to the World Series: You're sitting at Coors Field, your stomach gets a serious craving, and then the thought hits you.

"Why don't they sell this perfect food? It would be a surefire hit!"

Here's your chance to swing into action.

Got an idea for the heir apparent to nachos? A sandwich that'll have fans forgetting about hot dogs and burgers? The next great food to drop in your lap while you juggle your beer?

The Rocky Mountain News, ARAMARK and Coors Field have teamed up for the Rockies Fan Fare Challenge. Come up with an original recipe made with Colorado ingredients - it might be a snack, an entree or a dessert - that you'd like to see served at Rockies games. Then submit it to us for a chance to be among the five prize winners, including the grand prize - a party for 16 at a Coors Field suite during a Rockies game.

If your item is selected, Coors Field will dish it up at a concession stand during the games later in the season. Judges will include me and representatives of ARAMARK, the food vendor at Coors Field, including Rik Kiessling, regional executive chef of ARAMARK stadiums and arenas.

As you're thinking up ideas, keep in mind that we're looking for an original recipe with Rocky Mountain style, a handheld item that's not too complicated to make.

To get your creative juices flowing, check out some of the items already on the Coors Field concession menu on pages 10 and 11 or online at RockyMountainNews.com. There's a surprising breadth of food available.

More tips for contestants:

* Consider the latest food trends for ideas. The dish should be something that helps define our region, and must be made with local or regional ingredients. We're looking for a signature Colorado ballpark item. Blueberry pie? Not so much. Clam chowder? Hmmm, have you been clam digging lately?

* Look at foods you might serve at a game-watching party at home - dishes that are easy to graze on, good during stressful moments and easy to make. Because, after all, you want to watch the game, too.

* Try to visualize what you like to eat - and then apply it to the ballpark. Sushi might have seemed like a natural, but it didn't translate well when it was on the menu - probably because few of us think of hitting the sushi stand at a ballpark.

* Since I'm not eligible to enter, I'll pass along my idea for an original snack. Every day around 3 p.m., I pour oatmeal and artificial sweetener into a latte. It's handheld, portable, and it takes time to eat it with a spoon. Sure, you could enter it in the contest, but I'm guessing you can do better than Marty's Oatmeal Latte.
